An explosion and fire Wednesday morning on a major gas pipeline in Moldova should not affect Russian gas supplies to southern Europe, Russian-Moldovan gas transport joint venture Moldovagas said. The blast occurred in Moldova's separatist region of Trans-Dniestr on one of the three pipes making up the trans-Balkan trunk pipeline. This runs from Russia via Ukraine and Moldova, and is the main transit route for Russian gas exports to the Balkans. Moldovagas said flows were rerouted to the other lines. Specialists are now investigating the cause of the blast, and Moldovagas said it would take up to three days to repair the line.
