Icy UK Issues Second Gas Alert in Week

The UK was bracing for more sub-zero temperatures overnight Thursday and into Friday, with the Met Office warning of icy roads across much of the country and heavy fresh snowfalls in many areas. High-pressure gas grid operator National Grid at midday issued its second Gas Balancing Alert (GBA) this week, for the gas day starting 6 a.m. Thursday. Before the first alert on Monday, there hadn't been one since 2006. The alerts, triggered when gas demand threatens to outstrip supply, urge UK suppliers to tell their large customers, typically factories, to stop burning gas for several hours; generators also normally boost coal use at the expense of gas (IOD Jan.5,p4).
