Marker assisted selection for Striga-resistant sorghum.

摘要

This paper describes the importance of marker-assisted selection, particularly in determining the precise segments of the sorghum genome known to confer Striga-resistance and transferring them to farmer-preferred cultivars through conventional breeding with very promising results. The use of genetic markers enables scientists to precisely transfer only the weed resistance genes from the N13 sorghum cultivar to farmer-preferred sorghum cultivars without jeopardizing important agronomic qualities such as drought tolerance and high yields.
