BP slashed spending by $1 billion in the first quarter, putting it on course to exceed its planned $2 billion cost-savings target for this year. The UK-based supermajor on Tuesday reported a steep fall in first-quarter earnings, but the decline was not as big as forecast, suggesting the corporate restructuring that began in mid-2007, as well as the more recent costcutting exercise, is bearing fruit.
