US Occidental Petroleum appears to have won the competition for the exclusive right to negotiate an exploration contract for Bahrain's deep gas play. Last week, Bahrain's oil minister and head of its National Oil and Gas Authority (No- ga), Abdul Hussein Mirza, signed a frame- work agreement with Occidental Chairman and CEO Ray Irani. Oxy now begins one- on-one negotiations that will likely take sev- eral months.
