Algiers has announced the official results of the Apr. 9 presidential election, won by incumbent Abdelaziz Bouteflika with 90% of the vote. The country's constitutional council rejected all 57 appeals lodged. The government last year amended the constitution to allow Bouteflika to serve a third, five-year term, leading to a boycott of this month's vote by opposition groups. They also claimed the official turnout rate of 74% was inflated; turnout in 2007 legislative elections was just 37%, and only 59% in the last round of presidential elections in 2004.
