The approach of Tropical Storm Bonnie on Friday forced BP to halt efforts to permanently plug its Macondo deepwater oil well in the Gulf of Mexico as ships and workers moved out of the area to ensure their safety. Two rigs stopped drilling relief wells - intended to halt the uncontrolled flow of oil once and for all - and prepared to move out of the path of the storm, which was expected to hit the area on Saturday with winds of 39 to 73 miles per hour.
