Bookmakers Take Bets on Change at the Top of BP

BP Chief Executive Tony Hayward began the year at the top of his game, feted by investors for having steadied the company after the departure of John Browne in controversial circumstances back in 2007 (IOD Feb.3,p1). Now, after the worst environmental disaster in US history, his job appears to be on the line. Deservedly or not, Hayward has taken much of the flack for the catastrophe, and media reports suggest he could be preparing to step down. The UK major itself still insists he has its full support, but speculation now focuses on possible replacements for both Hayward and his boss, BP chairman Carl-Henric Svanberg.
