Herold Says Slowdown Has Stalled Merger and Acquisition Activity

The economic slowdown and tight access to credit sent global and North American upstream merger and acquisition (M&A) activity to three-year lows late last year, according to energy research firm IHS Herold. A number of pending transactions were also axed.Herold said the upstream M&A deal count dropped to 44 in the fourth quarter of 2008, down nearly 40% from the previous quarter and 50% from the fourth quarter of 2007.
