The importance of harvest weed seed control in weed management

Across the vast Australian cropping region, the introduction in the 1980s of highly effective in-crop herbicides facilitated the implementation of highly productive, intensive conservation cropping systems based on no-till and stubble retention (Llewellyn et al. 2012). However, the many advantages of herbicides over other weed-control practices resulted in the almost complete reliance on herbicidal crop weed control. The biological repercussion has been the widespread evolution of herbicide-resistantweed populations occurring extensively throughout the Australian cropping region. Nowhere else has this evolution been more dramatic. Now multiple herbicide resistance dominates, with weed populations resistant to multiple herbicide modes of action. Asmultiple resistance means the loss of use of many herbicides, the management of these weed populations is now a major focus across Australian cropping regions.
