Asuccession of exotic (alien) insect pests and microbial pathogens have entered the United Kingdom (UK) over the last ten years mostly from other European Union (EU) nations, exploiting the 'free trade' that exists between the 27 EU member nations under which few quarantine measures worthy of that name exist. The UK government has publicly taken on the fight against Chalara ash dieback disease caused by the fungus Chalara fraxinea but as bad as the situation is with chalara on common ash, there are other exotic pathogens that have been established in the UK for longer and with a much broader host range.
