摘要

South Korea's cabinet has pledged to reduce carbon emissions by 30% from expected levels in 2020. This would translate into a 4% cut in emissions from 2005 levels. President Lee Myung Bak's government approved the move Tuesday, ahead of next month's UN summit in Copenhagen designed to find a successor to the Kyoto climate treaty. Although a breakthrough in Copenhagen is unlikely, South Korea wants to set an example for the world's developing countries, Lee was quoted as saying by Yonhap news agency (IOD Nov.17,p3). South Korea is not required to set targets under the existing Kyoto treaty.
