Despite the economic downturn, global wind power capacity grew by 31% in 2009, adding 37.5 gigawatts to reach 157.9 GW, according to the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC). The market for new wind turbines was worth $63 billion in 2009, it said Wednesday. China - the world's biggest emitter of greenhouse gases - accounted for a third of the growth, almost doubling its installed power capacity from 12 GW in 2008 to 25 GW last year.
