The UV-Vis absorption and magnetic circular dichroism spectra of (Bu(4)N)(3)Ru(CN)(6) and (Bu(4)N)(3)Os(CN)(6) were measured at 4.2 K. The MCD spectra confirm the assignments of the ligand-to-metal charge transfer transitions in these complexes. They also cast doubt on earlier d-d assignments made for Os(CN)(6)(3-) and Fe(CN)(6)(3-). Attempts to measure the intraconfigurational d-d splitting of the T-2(2g) ground state of (Bu(4)N)(3)Ru(CN)(6) were unsuccessful. However, the near IR MCD spectrum of (Bu(4)N)(3)Os(CN)(6) showed a sharp negative line at 4110 cm(-1), with some weaker bands to higher energy. [References: 28]
