Antiplatelet therapy after coronary stent placement in patients with atrial fibrillation

The issue of choosing a coronary stent and, by extension, a dual antiplatelet regimen in a patient in need of chronic oral anticoagulation is not an uncommon problem encountered in clinical practice. Every year in the USA, approximately 400,000-500,000 patients [1] undergo percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and stenting and another 500,000-1,000,000 undergo PCI in Europe [2]. Of these patients, it is estimated that anywhere between 5 and 30 % already are on or may have an indication for chronic anticoagulation therapy [3-5].
