Biaxial stress-stain properties of elastomer-coated fabrics

Since they are embedded in the matrix, warp and woof are closely linked in elastomer-coated fabrics. The stress in the wrap and woof direction is always dependent upon the strain in both directions and therefore the stress-strain behaviour should be described biaxially. A mechanical model of an elastomer-coated fabric for describing the behaviour of the materials is presented and a material law derived therefrom. After the implementation of the law in a commercial finite element program, the mechanial behaviour of complex textile membrane structures may be calculated numerically. The parameters of the material law may be uniquely related to the properties of the individual components or to the geometrical parameters of the fabric. This means that the optimum fabric properties for special applications may be predicted by varying the material parameters within their known limits.
