Minimizing complications following stent implantation: outcomes and follow-up

The introduction of coronary artery stenting was a significant advance, resulting in reduced incidence of angiographic restenosis and repeat revascularization in the treatment of atherosclerotic coronary artery disease. Despite these improvements, patients undergoing coronary artery stenting are at risk of complications after implantation. Acute and chronic complications related to coronary artery perforation, stent thrombosis, in-stent restenosis and periprocedural myocardial infarction can be life-threatening. Minimizing complications through optimal stent implantation, adequate anticoagulation and secondary prevention are vitally important to provide the best outcomes. This review will address the acute and chronic complications of coronary artery stenting and strategies to minimize complications.
