Essential Engineering Criteria for the Abandonment of Tailings Lagoons as Wetland Features

The Health and safety Executive and the principal operator in the privatised UK coal-mining industry, RJB Mining (UK) Ltd, have reached an agreement on the requirements for conversion of former colliery tailings lagoons into environmentally diverse water features as an alternative to over-capping. Safety concerns and factors influencing the residual level of risk are considered and engineering design criteria that should be applied in the construction of such features to ensure their long-term stability are described.
