Objectives: The time taken to reach FeO_2 of 90% was compared between two groups of patients preoxygenated with oxygen 100% with standard tidal volume breathing (TVB) techniques, for five minutes with 5 Liin or with 10 L/min FGF oxygen using long breathing tubes in a circle absorber circuit.Design: This was a prospective randomized single-blind study, involving 66, ASA I or II patients, undergoing general anaesthesia for various surgical procedures.Materials and Methods: Two randomly selected groups of patients were preoxygenated with 100% oxygen using long breathing circuits, with standard tidal volume breathing (TVB) techniques, for five minutes: Group 1 with 5 L/min fresh gas flow (FGF) while Group 2 with 10 L/min FGF. Fractional concentration of oxygen in the expired gas (FeO_2) at room air (baseline) and at 0.5 minutes interval during preoxygenation were recorded.Results: Preoxygenation with 10 L/min FGF oxygen required 2.8+/-0.5 minutes to reach a target FeO_2 of 90% compared to 5 L/min FGF oxygen which required 4.6+/-0.72 minutes to reach a similar target.Conclusion: The efficacy of preoxygenation with TVB technique using long breathing tubing was better with FGF oxygen 10 L/min as compared to FGF oxygen 5 L/min.
