Non-Base Grouted Piled Foundations in Thanet Sand for a Project in East India Dock, London

A new 50 m tall structure is to be built at Nutmeg Lane, London, and is to be founded on 195 bearing piles. The footprint of the building is within the old backfilled East India Dock. Ground conditions comprise deep fill with obstructions, overlying London Clay, and then the Lambeth Group, Thanet Sand and Upper Chalk. Cementation was appointed as the main contractor for the enabling and foundation works for this prestigious project. This package included the preparation of the site, probing and removal of obstructions, piling works and the construction of underground fuel tanks. This paper will firstly describe the design aspects of the piling works and will develop the reasons why base grouting of the piles was deemed unnecessary.
