The Dorney Bridge project is part of the Environment Agency's flood alleviation scheme to divert water from the Thames at Maidenhead along an 11.6 km artificial channel, which rejoins the river east of Eton. To enable the huge box culvert to be jacked through an embankment under the Great Western railway, which runs from London to southwest England, ground freezing was needed to maintain stability of the embankment. The paper describes the project, reviews the site investigation data and sets out the freezing scheme layout. Installation of the freezing scheme is covered in terms of the freeze tube drilling aspects and their position surveying.
