Background: Endodontic treatment of maxillary first molar tooth, it is essential that care should be taken over identification of the extra canal, especially at mesiobuccal root canal.Objective: The canal configuration of mesiobuccal root of first maxillary molar tooth among Bangladeshi population was investigated.Methods: A total of 100 maxillary first molar teeth that stored in 10% formalin solution were used for this study. Following access cavity preparation and identification of the root canal orifices, the teeth were placed in 5.25% Sodium hypochlorite for 48 hours, demineralized for three days in 5% nitric acid and rinsed in running water. Finally, Indian ink was injected into the root canal and the teeth were dehydrated in a graded series of ethyl alcohol followed by placing into the methyl salicylate solution for two hours to make them transparent. The cleared teeth were then examined by using a magnifying glass to investigate the canal configuration.Results: Among the 100 mesiobuccal root examined, 54 (54%) had one canal (MB-1); these canals are Type I canal configuration. The remaining 36 (36%) had more than one canal(MB-2). The distribution of canal configuration among 36 teeth of mesiobuccal canals were as follows: 14 (38.88%) were type II, 3 (8.33%) type III, 13 (36.11%) type IV, and 6 (16.66%) were type V canal configuration.Conclusion: More than one canal may be present in the mesiobuccal root of maxillary first molar teeth. Furthermore, type II and type IV canal configurations are more frequently found when comparing to type III and type V.
