Simultaneous Measurement of Electrogastrogram and Ultrasonogram: Gastric Contraction and Mental Arithmetic

Objective: The main aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between gastric dynamics and electrical phenomena during mental stress.Materials and Methods: Antropyloric movements were measured for 25 minutes after the consumption of a meal using continuous ultrasonography of the pyloric anterior wall and simultaneous electrogastrograms (EGG) obtained in 8 healthy subjects. The relationship between the electrogastrograms and the actual gastric contractions while the subjects were performing mental arithmetic was then studied. The recordings were performed while the subjects were in a supine potion under five stages: 1)under fasting conditions and at rest for 5 minutes before lunch, 2) while eating biscuits and drinking water for 5 minutes, 3) while at rest for 10 minutes, 4) while doing mental arithmetic for 10 minutes, and 5) while at rest for 5 minutes after performing mental arithmetic. Results: The mental arithmetic significantly decreased the gastric contractions, the ultrasonographic power at 3 cycles per minute, the electrogastrographic power at 3 cycles per minute, and the mean R-R interval. The mental arithmetic did not affect the ultrasonographic diameter of the pyloric anterior wall or the dominant frequency of the EGG. Conclusions: The synchronicity between EGG and gastric movements increased after a mental arithmetic stimulus. Furthermore, the mental arithmetic inhibited postprandial gastric motility and the EGG for the lower abdomen as well as the heart rate.
