Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II) and Mn(II) complexes with newly synthesized Schiff base ligands derived from 4-methoxyphenylenediamine, furfuraldehyde and 2, 2' bipyridyl. The binding manner of ligand to metal, composition and geometry of metal complexes were examined by various physicochemical methods inclisive of elemental analysis, conductivity measurements, magnetic moments, IRand electronic spectral studies. Molar conductance data reveal the fact that chelates are non-electrolytes. UV-Vis spectra and magnetic moments have suggested distorted octahedral stereochemistry for Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II) and Mn(II) complexes. Schiff base ligands and their mononuclear metal complexes have also been evaluated for their antibacterial activity and are found to be energetic and inhibit the bacterial growth of Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus (as Gram-positive bacteria) and Klebsilla pneumonia and Escherichia coli (as Gram-negative bacteria).
