The use of chemicals in preventing and treating scale deposits during oil production has recently becomes an important practice in the oil industry. This is consistent with the fact that, for an optimum oil production from any well, scale deposition has to be minimized if not completely eradicated. Scale inhibitors are often employed and have proven high degree of efficiencies; however, how these chemicals interact with the reservoir rock especially the carbonate rock has only been partly resolved. This paper considers how the interaction of the carbonate rock and the chemical scale inhibitor takes place. Background issues related to the mineral scaling, and chemical scale inhibitors have been discussed. Chemistry of the reactions occurring upon injection of the chemical scale inhibitor into the carbonate reservoir has also been reviewed.
