Variation in Tooth Size and Arch Dimension in Malaysian Chinese Subject with Torus Palatinus

Objective: To determine variation in tooth size and arch dimension in Malaysian Chinese population with torus palatinus.Materials and Methods: The study was carried out on study models of 135 subjects with torus palatinus (98 females and 37 males), aged between 11-39 years old. An electronic digital caliper was used to measure the mesio-distal tooth sizes of the upper and lower permanent teeth (first molar to first molar), the intercanine, intermolar width and arch length. Data were analyzed by using SPSS 20 and intraexaminer errors were evaluated in order to ensure reliability.Results: The results indicated that the mesiodistal tooth width and arch dimension were consistently larger in female subjects compare to male, except mandibular right second premolar, mandibular left lateral incisor and mandibular left canine. There were no statistical significant differences in the mesiodistal tooth width and arch dimension between female and male except maxillary central and lateral incisor (p < 0.05). There were generally no significant between right and left side of mesiodistal tooth width.Conclusion: These measurements will allow clinicians to use specific standards in diagnosis and treatment planning that is most appropriate for their torus palatinus subjects.
