Comparison of Variation in Tooth Size and Arch Dimension in Malaysian Malay and Malaysian Chinese Subject with Torus Palatinus

Objective: To determine variation in tooth size and arch dimension in subject with torus palatinus between Malaysian Malay and Malaysian Chinese.Materials and methods: Nine hundred ninety six (996) from 2000 study models were picked up randomly and were examined for the presence of both tori at Hospital University Science Malaysia (HUSM). From 996 study models they were divided according to ethnicity (Malay, Chinese). Then, the torus group were measured for mesiodistal tooth sizes of the upper and lower permanent teeth (first molar to first molar), intercanine, intermolar width and arch length using an electronic digital caliper.Results: Between Malaysian Malay and Chinese results showed that the mesiodistal tooth width and arch dimension were consistently larger in Malaysian Chinese subject compare to Malaysian Malay. There were statistical significant differences found in the mesiodistal tooth between Malaysian Malay and Malaysia Chinese (p < 0.05).Conclusion: Comparing between ethnicity, Malaysian Chinese have wider teeth than Malaysian Malay.
