Comparative Study of the Ovarian Interstitial Gland in Non-hibernating and Hibernating Mammals

Studied have been the ovaries of guinea pigs, mouse, rabbits, ground squirrels, bats and women. The goal of the study is the development and the changes in the interstitial gland during the phases of the estrous cycle before and after coitus in animals with provoked ovulation (rabbits) and before and after the spring awakening in hibernating mammals. It has been established that in the phase of the metaestrus the intetstitial gland is significantly developed, as well as after the coitus of the rabbitand after the spring awakening of the ground squirrels and the bats. It has also been established that a thecal type of interstitial gland is to be observed in all studied animal species. It is thought that both the medullar cords and the cortical onesare a source for the formation of interstitial cells. That type is called an epithelial one due to the epithelial origin and is to be found in all studied mammals and in man. The adneural type (hilus cells) is to be observed only in women. The rete type- only in bats, and the stromatic type - in rabbits and bats. Obviously, there is certain species speeificity.
