By the use of a tourniquet type (rolling type) catalytic converter can, which is adaptable to the diameter of a substrate, the stable holding pressure can be successfully obtained. Additionally, by the use of a double layered mat material, consisting of an inner layer of high heat resistant alumina fiber and an outer layer of the current vermiculite containing material, the rate of holding pressure loss due to mat degradation is reduced. The combination of these two techniques allows to produce the canning of 1200 cells, thin wall substrate without breakage and, further, enables in-use durability requirements to be met.
