Lafaune du site magdalenien de Vitte-Saint-Jacques 'le Tittoy'(sondage'Brezillon'

Although known for more than thirty years, the main data concerning thefaunal remains of the Paris Basin Magdalenian site Ville-Saint-Jacques had never been published. Following a new complete study of the archaeological bones from a 20 m2 test trench on this site by M. Brezillon in 1970, as part of the PCR "Habitats et peuplements tardiglaciaires du Bassin parisien", this paper aims at completing the zooarchaeological data of this area. Thus, the Ville-Saint-Jacques site is characterized by afaunal spectrum dominated jointly by reindeer and horse, far more represented compared with the very scarce bones of other species (bear, wolf, Musteli-dae). This faunal assemblage, the abundance of killed reindeer and horse, the spatial pattern of processed carcasses, as well as the close proximity of the site with some other key Magdalenian sites in the Paris Basin (Pincevent, Tureau des Gardes, le Grand Canton) are analysed and discussed. Some reflections and research prospects are then formulated with regard to the social organization of such bands, their main hunting goals and their integration in the environment during this unstable climatic period.
