Bogota-Gran Tierra Energy shares firmed January 18 after it announced the $195 million purchase of Petrolifera Petroleum Limited, a deal that will substantially expand the Canada-based company's footprint in Colombia and elsewhere in South America. The transaction follows Petrolifera's announcement last year that it was short of working capital and would seek a strategic merger or buyer, a Gran Tierra spokesman said January 18. Buyer and seller are both based in Calgary with operations in South America.
