Prospect of Grain Combine Harvester in Rice-Wheat Cropping System in Bihar

A study was conducted at research farm as well as at farmers' field in the Bihar during Kharif and Rabi season, of 2003-04 with three plots and two varieties each for rice and wheat crop harvesting through Grain combine harvester. Grain combine harvester can easily be used in the field by skilled person. The operating speed of grain combine harvester in rice and wheat was 5.43 and 5.41 km/h, respectively. The effective field capacity, field efficiency, total non- collectable and collectable losses were found to be 0.91 and 1.08 ha/h, 62.35 and 68.79 per cent, 3.35 and 2.52 per cent, 3.04 and 4.09 per cent for rice and wheat crop, respectively. Although, the threshing and cleaning efficiencies were reported to be 99.27 and 97.59 per cent for rice while 99.30 and 98.40 per cent for wheat. The cost of harvesting and threshing by Grain combine harvester was only Rs. 955/ ha for rice and Rs. 805/ha for wheat indicating their by saving in comparison to other conventional methods. There was net saving ofRs. 955/- and Rs. 1605/ha for harvesting rice crop in comparison to tractor mounted reaper in combination with treading by tractor and manual harvesting and threshing, respectively. Similarly net saving of Rs. 1440/- and Rs. 1945ha for harvesting wheat crop was reported in comparison to reaper thresher system and man bullock system, respectively.
