Physiological Responses of Indian Mustard to Interactive Effects of Water and Salt Stress Tolerance

Response of water and salt stress and their interaction was studied in two Brassica juncea varieties viz. CS-52 and RH-30, Surface sterilized seeds were grown in earthen pots filled with dune sand, Iso-osmotic levels (-0.22 and -0.44Mpa) of salt and water stress were induced using sodium chloride for salt stress and withholding water for water stress. Water as well as salt stress resulted in reduced relative water content, increased proline content and relative stress injury. It urns found to be relatively more in RH-30 as compared to CS-52 under water stress. Under salt stress the effects were reverse to that of water stress and found more in CS-52 as compared to RH-30. During the interaction of two stresses, variety CS-52 proved to be more resistant than RH-30 as it showed least reduction in yield parameters and increased 1000 seed weight was recorded in CS-52 under all type of stress treatments.
