KNOWLEDGE CREATION IN THE TELEWORK CONTEXT

This paper suggests that 'telework' alters the context within which teleworkers acquire knowledge. Because of sophisticated information technologies, teleworkers have greater access to on-line information and documentation. This access creates the potential for higher explicit knowledge in comparison with the traditional work environment. However, telework increases the physical distance from work and decreases the ability to socialize. Increased physical distance creates a challenge in the teleworkers' abilities to acquire tacit knowledge. Socialization, mentoring, training and documentation practices, therefore, become important for maintaining knowledge in the organization. [References: 43]
