Frontline Demonstration Through KVK's an Approach to Increase Production of Gram

A frontline demonstration on gram (Cicer arietinum) was carried out by KVK, Dumka, Jharkhand to disseminate the refined technology specially to control pod-borer which led to decline in cultivation of gram in Dumka district of Jharkhand. Scientists ofKVK conducted a PRA in Naunigaon village where gram and lentil were the major pulse crop in Rabi season. The pH of the soil varies between 6.0 to 6.5.0n the basis of PRA and tools like Problem cause diagram the scientists of KVK came to the conclusion that pod-borer was the real menace in the region which led to low yield of gram and as a result, a decline in total cropped area under gram.PRA helped in avoiding the top-down approach and real concept ofbottom-up approach with scientist-farmer linkage was taken up for the programme formulation and its implementation through FLD. This approach also led to selecting the most critical intervention points and inputs for better transfer of technology topoost up the production of gram in the area. During 2004-05 maximum, minimum and average demonstration yield was recorded to a tune of 16.30 a/ha, 11.60 q/ ha and 14.35 q/ha respectively. Tlie local check yield with farmers' practices was recorded to be 10.00 q/lia giving an increase of 43.5 per cent. Similarly, during 2005-06 maximum, minimum and dverage demonstration yield was recorded as 18.33 q/ha, 12.72 q/ha and 16.37 q/ha respectively giving an increase of 63.7 per cent over local check the potential yield of the variety Pusa-256 is 20-22 q/ha.
