Characterization of viruses causing French bean mosaic in Himachal Pradesh.

Surveys of French bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) crops in 7 districts of Himachal Pradesh, India, were conducted to collect samples from plants showing different types of mosaics. On the basis of symptoms produced on the cultivar Jawala and the host range, 8 isolates of the virus were distinguished. Sap and aphid [Aphididae] transmission, virion morphology, cytopathology, immunosorbent electron microscopy and ELISA studies revealed that 7 of the isolates belonged to bean common mosaic potyvirus (BCMV) and the 8th to bean yellow mosaic potyvirus. BCMV was the predominant virus.
