Rice Tungro Disease (RTD) was found to be associated with two viruses an RNA virus, Rice Tungro Spherical Virus (RTSV) and a DNA, Rice Tungro Bacilliform Virus (RTBV). Tungro viruses are transmitted by six leafhopper species, five of which are in thegenus Nephotettix. Green leafhopper (GLH), N. virescens has higher transmission efficiency than other vector species and is usually more abundant in irrigated rice fields. PCR with RTBV specific primer detected the presence of RTBV from the viruliferousvector with the amplification of~ 1100 bp. RT-PCR with the RTSV specific primer detected the presence of RTSV with the amplification of~880 bp. Hence, the rice Tungro viruses, RTBV and RTSV were detected in the vector, Nephotettix virescens through PCR.
