Sprinkling irrigation represents the broad class of pressurized irrigation method, in which water is carried through a network of pipe system to a point near which it will be jetted through the air to spread from the pipe network across the soil surface. The economic cost of a sprinkler irrigation system is usually governed by appropriate selection and design of sprinkler heads, nozzles, laterals, main line and pumping system. Uniformity coefficient and total annual cost both must be considered during the design of the system. In the present study, undertaken in Malwa regions of Madhya Pradesh, single nozzle overhead sprinkler was operated under 1.5, 2,0, 2.5 and 3.0 kg/cm(2) pressures and catch cans data were collected at grid spacing of 1m. Lateral pipe lines were chosen of 75, 90 and 110mm diameter as prevalent in the study area. Overlapped pattern and its uniformity coefficient were determined to study the impact of sprinkler and later movements. The sprinklers and laterals were moved at spacing in the multiples of 6m due to the easily availability in the market. The total cost of Rs. 1.12, 1.44 and 1.82 per unit of sprinkled area were obtained for 9 x 12m spacing with highest UCCabb of 89%. Single nozzle sprinklers at 12 in movement and laterals movements of 9 m was found to perform best if both uniformity coefficient and total annual cost are to he considered. The findings of the present study will be helpful to the sprinkler irrigation designers as well as to the water resources managers engaged in planning and implementation.
