In the 50 years since British Poultry Science was first published, around 1000 papers, which can readily be categorised as being concerned with nutrition, have appeared. Despite the remit I was given (and accepted), namely to write an article summarising the most interesting 10/12 papers in this area, it would be invidious if not impossible for me to claim that what I have chosen from such a vast number are widely accepted as being those of greatest interest. I have, therefore, selected fairly arbitrarily papers which I consider to be of substantial interest taking into account the era when they were published and their longevity. Even these conditions proved quite challenging and it is inevitable that many will contest this selection. All I can say to this criticism is that I accept it.
