Companies in automobile Industry are facing a competitive challenge to improve and optimize on quality of components used in an automobile. Quality of paint on a vehicle is an important factor which impacts the overall quality of the product. In the last few years, processes, equipments and machinery have experienced fast technological changes, thus demanding even more specific tools to control and assess the quality parameters. This paper presents a detailed literature review on attempts made by researchers to assess and improve the quality of paint on automobile parts. Applications of TQM, optimization techniques, simulations and other quality engineering techniques have been explored through the literature review. Finally, the research gaps have been identified and possible areas of future research have been suggested.
