Wave theory has been applied to analyse thedisintegration of metallic melts at the edge of arotating disc. A model has been proposed to calculatethe mean powder particle size in the direct-drop-formation regime. The calculated optimal wave numberand mean powder particle size are in good agreementwith experimental data. The effects of atomizationparameters and material properties on the optimal wavenumber and mean powder particle size have been studied.Fine powder particles can be produced by increasingdisc speed and/or disc diameter Powder particle sizeis also controlled by the ratio p/a of density tosurface tension of the melt. Fine powders are producedfor melts with high p/a ratio.
