An elderly man called David Tomlins appeared at Southampton Borough Police Court on 27 November 1899 charged with attempted suicide. What the reasons were for this desperate act, the report did not say. The park keeper at Southampton Common testified that he had found him sitting on a bench, behaving oddly. Tomlins then confessed to having consumed a large dose of laudanum with intent to take his own life. In those days this action was illegal but the uncontrolled sale of such narcotics wasn't. The label on the bottle bore the name of a local pharmacist, Herbert Ferryman.
