Interaction between supplementary myo-inositol and phytase in poultry diets: effect on dietary phosphorus digestibility

Feeding inositol and phytase improved growth of broiler chickens but only inositol supplementation improved dietary P digestibility.The beneficial effect of exogenous phytase is understood to be due to the direct hydrolytic effects on phytate and the subsequent improvement in the availability of nutrients connected with reduced endogenous losses (Selle and Ravindran, 2007). Theoretically it is possible that high dosages of phytase are able to completely hydrolyse dietary phytate in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of poultry liberating free myoinositol (MI). Zyla et al (2004) reported that feeding 0.1% of pure MI improved the growth of broilers but reduced dietary P availability. There is a lack of information of the effect of higher dietary MI levels on bird growth and dietary P availability.
