The casing design for salt beds is a major engineering challenge during oil exploration and exploitation. In China, casing failure problems due to the non-uniform external salt loading are often encountered and cause significant economic losses. In addition to those losses, the costs associated with overly conservative casing designs can also be considerable. In an effort to minimize project allocations, it is necessary to quantitatively determine the external casing loading within salt beds.
