IEA increases projections for oil demand

London-The International Energy Agency January 18 made a sizable upward revision to its 2011 world oil demand estimate, largely on the back of stronger-than-expected economic growth, but warned rising oil prices could threaten the economy. The IEA now expects world oil demand to average 89.13 million b/d in 2011, 360,000 b/d higher than previously estimated, it said in its latest monthly oil report. The forecasts were released the same day that OPEC Secretary General Abdalla el-Badri attacked the IEA's "unrealistic" projections (see story, page 12).
