Influence of phytase on gene expression in the gut may help explain some of the phytase-mediated effects on broiler performance.High doses (>1500 FTU/kg) of phytase lead to benefits on broiler performance (Campasino, York, Wyatt, Bedford, & Dozier, 2014) above regular doses (500 FTU/kg), which may be explained by extra-phosphoric effects following the hydrolysis of phytate and production of the lower inositol phosphate esters (iPs). Phytate hydrolysis releases nutrients bound to phytate, and this may influence the expression of intestinal nutrient transporter proteins to facilitate their absorption. Though less well studied, phytate hydrolysis to myo-inositol and the lower iPs (iP2-3) may have further benefits following absorption, such as protecting against antioxidant damage or through the production and maintenance of tight junction proteins for gut integrity. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the influence of regular and high doses of phytase on the expression of nutrient transporters and markers of cellular integrity in the jejunum and antioxidant activity in the liver.
