A veterinarian's field experiences and perspective of current and future welfare issues within the UK poultry sector

With poultry production now providing up to 40% of the protein consumed by the UK public, the welfare needs of the tens of millions of animals that provide this cannot be ignored. Increasingly, the welfare provisions of these animal groups is consumerled with major UK retailers influencing welfare policy throughout the various sectors from broilers to turkeys and from meat to egg production. It is clear that current legislation across Europe and in the UK requires development and that UK retailers and farm assurance standards can be more influential than legislation.
