Mechanization of underground mining: a quick look backward and forward

Mine mechanization, especially themechanization of underground hard rock mines providesa large potential for reduced costs and improvedprofitability. This paper examines a number ofsuccessful developments mechanizing underground mineexcavation, including raises, shafts, tunnels, andstopes. It then examines mechanization developments,which are under way, and others which are not yet beingdeveloped. A look back at mine mechanization projectsthat have failed is included as a perspective whenconsidering projects for the future. Factorsinfluencing the development of mine mechanization arereviewed, as well as some of the factors that will berequired for successful mechanization in the future.It appears that the development of mechanization forfundamentally new mining systems will require complexjoint ventures involving mining companies, equipmentsuppliers, governments, and academic partners workingtogether on a long-term commitment. These technicaljoint ventures will require long-term commitments ofcapital to produce the technology that will berequired for mechanizing the underground mines of the future.
