Application of Infrared Thermography for Conservation Treatment on the Defect Zone of Stone Monument

This study detected damaged zones and evaluated the effect of conservation treatment on blistering zones for conserving the stone cultural heritage monuments using infrared thermography. Thermographic images of blistering stone after conservation treatment showed lower temperature ranges than did pre-treatment images. The temperatures and rates of temperature change at the blistering zones after the application of the conservation treatment were decreased drastically from 6.2 to 22.7°C and from 21.5% to 60.2%, respectively. This insensitivity to external temperature was due to a greater heat capacity that resulted from increased heat conductivity and density after the air-layer of the blistering zone was filled with synthetic resins. The infrared thermography technique will be important for future conservation treatment assessments and monitoring the conditions of blistering zones, and it will further serve to establish scientific conservation systems for stone cultural heritage monuments.
