In the near term, broadband service provider networks will join satellite, terrestrial and cable TV as a fourth digital distribution platform. Broadband video streams and downloads will be complementary services to broadcast services. Both forms will displace but not replace traditional TV. As the conventional boundaries between the TV and telecommunications industries disappear, disruptions to traditional broadcasting are inevitable. Ultimately, the delivery of programs across telecommunications networks will nurture a new breed of media players to challenge the dominance of conventional broadcast TV. New networks will emerge to enable global distribution. Consumers will be closer to the promise of being able to access any program, anytime, anywhere, on any device. In the end, distribution of digital video over wired and wireless broadband data networks could become the norm.
